The art of fishing is a fundamental element of local culture and has been for thousands of years. That’s why FOMT was so excited to receive a mini-grant from the Association of Retired Fish & Wildlife Service Employees to create a workshop in the CNMI for teaching fishing techniques and sharing information about careers in conservation.Â
The workshop will be composed of different stations that demonstrate and teach a different traditional fishing skill such as throwing a cast net, tying line to traditional hooks, or using traditional spears (Hawaiian sling). Other stations will include an NWRS conservation career station as well as stations that explain traditional fishing grounds and fishery stocks. Â
For the time being, this project is on hold as we await guidelines for how to align the workshop’s execution with appropriate safety procedures given the COVID-19 pandemic.
